As a child, she loved to read but hated Chinese school: there was too much rote memorisation and not enough fun.\n \nWhen her daughter turned 3, Deborah wanted to find Chinese/bilingual books like her beloved English children's classics: books with captivating stories and vivid characters told in everyday language.\n \nBut books like that were very difficult to find. So many are written for Mandarin speakers, assumed she could read and write fluently, or used standard written Chinese which is so different from spoken Cantonese that it might as well be another language.\n \nIt was hard to help her daughter love a story when she had to keep stopping to look up the words.
