\nMemories of Torreon, New Mexico is a collection of stories about the people of Torreon, New Mexico by the people of Torreon, edited by Judy Alderete Garcia. This book was written to preserve the unique culture, history and traditions of the people of the Manzano Mountains. It is also a way to educate others about the ever-changing culture of Nuevomexicanos. Here you will find stories about fiestas, matanzas, aguinaldos and the local curandera. There are also many universal themes like the flu epidemic of 1918, drought, educaton and religion. Just look at what one has said about Memories of Torreon, New Mexico and award winning- Stories from the Manzano Mountains (Garcia's second book). Thank you for publishing the Torreon and Manzano Mountain books. I disagree with your college professor. I think everyone would find the stories and mini-biographies interesting, I sure did. Most accounts are from a Hispanic perspective, and that added an interesting dimension for me. I am Anglo and was born in the Appalachian Mountains. But I too remember warm wood stoves and cold outhouses. I hid my lunch of biscuits from my more affluent classmates, similar to one child's memory of concealing tortillas. All the accounts detail our shared humanity--our dreams and aspirations, our love of family, our hardships. I now feel more connected to my new home, and I thank you for that. Please keep up the good work. Mike The content of this book is the same as Memories of Torreon, New Mexico with the matanza cover.
