Descriere The Fire Service: History, Traditions & Beyond - J. A. Rhodes

\n \nIt is said that, A person without knowledge of his history is like a tree without roots. Our past experiences, and traditions guide us. They serve as beacons in the night, illuminating both the dangers, and the proper course towards safety. \n \n This book is for everyone who ever wondered, why are fire engines red? Why does a chief have five 'bugles' and a captain have two? Why are fire hydrants sometimes also called fire plugs? and why do we toll bells and play bagpipes at firefighter funerals? \n \n The author explores the origins behind some of the most popular American Fire Services symbols ? the speaking trumpet, fire helmet, Maltese Cross, and the Star of Life. A timeline listing major fires, and firefighter deaths throughout history is provided, along with the origins of fire engines, hose, hydrants, fire extinguishers and bunker gear. \n \n Written in short easy to read chapters, this book is a must read for any fire fighter. It is designed to provide an important overview of roots of the fire service -- an overview of its origins, history, and traditions.\n
