Descriere The First Four Books of Poems - W. S. Merwin

\n \nHalf Roundel\n \nI make no prayer \n For the spoilt season, \n The weed of Eden. \n I make no prayer. \n Save us the green \n In the weed of time.\n \nNow is November; \n In night uneasy \n Nothing I say. \n I make no prayer. \n Save us from the water \n That washes us away.\n \nWhat do I ponder? \n All smiled disguise, \n Lights in cold places, \n I make no prayer. \n Save us from air \n That wears us loosely.\n \nThe leaf of summer \n To cold has come \n In little time. \n I make no prayer. \n From earth deliver \n And the dark therein.\n \nNow is no whisper \n Through all the living. \n I speak to nothing. \n I make no prayer. \n Save us from fire \n Consuming up and down.\n \nEvening with Lee Shore and Cliffs\n \nSea-shimmer, faint haze, and far out a bird \n Dipping for flies or fish. Then, when over \n That wide silk suddenly the shadow \n Spread skating, who turned with a shiver \n High in the rocks? And knew, then only, the waves' \n Layering patience: how they would follow after, \n After, dogged as sleep, to his inland \n Dreams, oh beyond the one lamb that cried \n In the olives, past the pines' derision. And heard \n Behind him not the sea's gaiety but its laughter.\n \nThe Fishermen\n \nWhen you think how big their feet are in black rubber \n And it slippery underfoot always, it is clever \n How they thread and manage among the sprawled nets, lines, \n Hooks, spidery cages with small entrances. \n But they are used to it. We do not know their names. \n They know our needs, and live by them, lending them wiles \n And beguilements we could never have fashioned for them; \n They carry the ends of our hungers out to drop them \n To wait swaying in a dark place we could never have chosen. \n By motions we have never learned they feed us. \n We lay wreaths on the sea when it has drowned them.\n
