The Makeshift City - Joshua Dudley Greer

Descriere The Makeshift City - Joshua Dudley Greer

The Makeshift City is compiled of photographs \nmade in and around Atlanta, Georgia. \nThe city of \nAtlanta is currently in the midst of a seismic shift of \npopulation growth, real estate development and \neconomic disparity that follows decades of systemic \nracism and Jim Crow policies that have plagued the \nAmerican South since the Civil War. Atlanta is a city \nthat has been built and destroyed several times over, \nleaving behind comparatively few traces of its own \npast despite its status as the cradle of the Civil Rights \nMovement and a progressive bubble amidst a rural \nand mostly conservative part of the country. As the \ncity continues to struggle against the backdrop of \nhistory, it seeks to rebrand itself as a global mecca for \nnew wealth, Hollywood production and opportunity.\n \nThe city of Atlanta in the US has endured constant change throughout its history. It has been \ndestroyed and rebuilt several times over, survived slavery and racial segregation \nto become the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement, and recently recast the \nstate of Georgia as a blue wave in a sea of neighbouring red states. The \nMakeshift City by Joshua Dudley Greer shows a contemporary Atlanta in a \nstate of flux--both a unique city with a specific history and culture, and a \ngeneric American metropolis struggling to forge its identity. \n\n
