Step into the vibrant tapestry of 12th-century Syria with An Arab-Syrian Gentleman and Warrior in the Period of the Crusades: Memoirs of Usamah ibn-Munqidh. Within these pages lies not just a historical account, but a portal to another time, where the echoes of chivalry and conflict resound through the ages. The genesis of this remarkable work was spurred by the initiative of Professor Dana C. Munro, a cherished friend of Usamah, who recognized the significance of his memoirs and urged the editor of the Records of Civilization to undertake a fresh study of his life. Guided by this noble endeavor, the writer embarked on a quest to unearth the true essence of Usamah's narrative, leading to a revelation of the suspect nature of previously published texts. Armed with a photostatic reproduction of the original manuscript, graciously procured through the American Embassy at Madrid, the writer set forth to illuminate the pages of history with newfound clarity. In this monumental undertaking, the writer found himself surrounded by a cadre of esteemed friends and scholars, whose invaluable insights and expertise illuminated the path ahead. Amin Bey Kisbany, former secretary of King Feisal, lent his intimate knowledge of Arabic culture to deciphering obscure passages, while Dr. Stephen J. Herben of Princeton University provided invaluable guidance on medieval warfare and armory terminology. Professor Henry L. Savage unraveled the intricacies of falconry and the hunt, while Professor Munro and the series editor offered invaluable critiques and encouragement. Amidst this scholarly camaraderie, the writer found steadfast support in the form of their wife, whose meticulous attention to detail brought the manuscript to life through careful proofreading, map sketching, and index preparation. Through these collective efforts, An Arab-Syrian Gentleman and Warrior in the Period of the Crusades emerges as a testament to the power of collaboration and scholarship. Within its pages, readers will find themselves transported to a world teeming with intrigue, valor, and cultural richness, as Usamah ibn-Munqidh's memoirs unfold with newfound clarity and authenticity. Whether you are a seasoned historian, an avid enthusiast of medieval literature, or simply a curious reader yearning for adventure, this book promises to captivate and enlighten in equal measure. So, heed the call of history, and embark on a journey through time with Usamah as your trusted guide. The past awaits,
